Dental bonding is the addition of tooth-coloured filling material to the teeth in order to cosmetically enhance the colour size and shape of the teeth. No tooth structure is removed during the dental bonding process, so this is also a reversible procedure if you want to update your smile in the future.
If you’re looking for a simple, affordable way to enhance your smile, contact our Calgary dental team at Macleod Trail Dental to book an appointment.
Dental bonding is used to treat a number of different cosmetic dental concerns, including:
Dental bonding is a minimally invasive procedure that includes no downtime and very little discomfort. Dental bonding appointments usually only last for about 30 to 60 minutes.
To better understand our dental bonding procedure, we’ve briefly outlined the steps below:
Typically no local anesthetic is used, a shade of filling is picked to match your teeth. Filling is added to the desired shape and size. The bonding is polished and smoothed to finish.
We start by looking at the tooth (or teeth) that needs bonding to better understand the extent of the damage or spacing. If we find any tooth decay, we will recommend fixing it before bonding.
Our dental hygienist will use a shade card to choose the right colour of resin that will blend with the rest of your teeth. This ensures you won’t notice a difference between the bonded portion and your natural teeth.
Once we choose a colour, we will apply it directly to your tooth and then sculpt it to make sure the new tooth looks its best and doesn’t cause any bite issues.
Once we have the desired shape we cure the bonding with a blue light to harden it onto your tooth.
Once cured, the bonding is polished and smoothed to finish.
Dental bonding has a lot of benefits such as:
However, dental bonding can’t fix everything. Depending on your smile goals, the strength of your teeth, and their overall structure, a dental crown or porcelain veneers might be a better option. For example, dental bonding:
Dental bonding is a good option for patients that want to close small spaces or cover chipped or worn down areas of their teeth. Dental bonding is also a good option for those who don’t want to commit to veneers — they can try bonding first instead.
However, not everyone can be a good candidate for dental bonding. Dental bonding isn’t always suitable and it will depend on the state of your teeth and your smile goals. If you’re unsure whether or not dental bonding is right for your unique dental goals, contact us today!
The dental material we use for dental bonding is the same as we use for dental fillings, composite resin. It is easy to apply and shape because of its gooey texture, and it can be hardened by a curing light.
Dental bonding costs vary on your situation and your local dental clinic. You can expect to pay anywhere between $100 to $500 for dental bonding per tooth. To get a more accurate estimate, we recommend contacting our office and booking a consultation with our local dentist.
No, dental bonding won’t ruin or weaken your teeth. However, dental bonding itself isn’t as strong as your natural teeth and can chip or break if not taken care of. We recommend avoiding biting on hard objects (pens, ice, pencils, etc) and chewing extra crunchy foods where the bonding was placed to ensure it remains strong.
Yes, dental bonding is reversible. If you want dental bonding removed, please contact your dentist.
Dental bonding can last for a number of years depending on how well you care for your teeth. To ensure your dental bonding lasts a long time, we recommend following good dental hygiene habits such as:
